Auto Union was a major German automobile manufacturing consortium throughout the twentieth century. It was formed in 1932 by the amalgamation of four pre-existing companies: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. The name “Auto Union” was chosen to symbolize the combination of these four brands.
The Auto Union logo features four interlocking rings, representing the initial four members: Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. The logo represents the unification of four German vehicle manufacturers that combined in 1932 to become Auto Union AG. Audi, a wholly owned company of Audi AG, continues to utilize the four rings as its logo.
