Burundi flag features a white saltire (diagonal cross) that extends to the flag's margins in the center of the green stripe. The saltire is a symbol of peace. A white five pointed star appears inside each of the saltire's four triangular portions. The stars represent the solidarity and aspirations of the four major ethnic groups in Burundi: the Hutu, Tutsi, Twa, and Ganwa. When Burundi gained independence from Belgium in 1967, it adopted the flag.
