The shield is divided into three sections to depict a Bible, a cross, and a golden heraldic prize. The shield is bordered by laurel and palm branches. A blue ribbon above the shield bears the national motto: "Dios, Patria, Libertad" (God, Fatherland, Liberty). On November 6, 1844, the flag was officially accepted.
