The District of Columbia flag comprises of three horizontal bars with identical width: two red bars at the top and bottom, and a white bar in the center. A blue insignia with three stars sits in the center of the white bar. The outlying stars are red, representing the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government of the United States. The colors of the flag, red and white, are taken from George Washington's flag. Charles A.R. Dunn produced the design, which was accepted in 1938.
