Belgium national flag consists of three equal-width vertical bands. The colors are black, yellow, and red, from left to right. The dark band represents Flanders, the northern Dutch-speaking region. The yellow band represents Wallonia, the southern French-speaking region. The red band represents the bilingual capital region of Brussels. The flag has been in use since Belgium's independence from the Netherlands in 1831. It was based on the colors of the Duchy of Brabant. The vertical color arrangement is distinctive to the Belgian flag.
